When a person with mobility impairments is moving into your
property, it may be up to you to cover and provide necessary tenant improvement projects. Of course, every
situation is different, so know what types of improvements you are responsible
for according to the terms of your agreement. No matter who is responsible,
however, certain changes will generally need to be made to make the property
more accessible for those with mobility issues. The wheelchair-bound tenant,
for example, would likely require an outdoor ramp to make getting into the building
easier. Likewise, lowered steps or small ramps or lifts that make entering and
exiting raised back doors or other entryways can also be helpful.
Tenant improvement
can also involve projects indoors. Many mobility impaired individuals are
helped by the addition of an elevator or stair lift. While some stair lift
models can be installed quickly and easily, others require major changes at the
installation site. It’s important that, no matter what the cost, every visitor
to your building has the ability to navigate to their destination.
